Recognition of a foreign qualification (Equipollenza)

Students holding an academic qualification obtained abroad may request the recognition (equipollenza) of their degree in Italy. This procedure verifies whether the foreign qualification corresponds to an equivalent Italian academic degree.

Required Documents

Applicants must prepare the following documents:

  • Original diploma or certified copy (titolo accademico / diploma)
  • Transcript of records with courses attended and examinations passed (certificato degli esami sostenuti / transcript of records)
  • Study programs (syllabi) of the completed courses (programmi degli insegnamenti / syllabus)
  • Official translation of the documents into Italian (traduzione ufficiale) – not required if the documents are issued in English, French, Spanish, or Portuguese
  • Legalization of the documents by Apostille or validation by the competent Italian diplomatic authority (apostille / legalizzazione consolare)

In addition, applicants must provide one of the following:

  • Declaration of Value (Dichiarazione di Valore) issued by the Italian Embassy or Consulate in the country where the qualification was obtained
  • CIMEA Statement of Comparability (Attestato di comparabilità CIMEA)
  • Diploma Supplement (Diploma Supplement) if available

Application Procedure

  1. Prepare the required academic documents and translations.
  2. Submit the documentation together with a valid identity document (documento di identità) and the required administrative forms.
  3. Pay the administrative evaluation fee (€150 contributo amministrativo).
  4. The competent Academic Council (Consiglio del Corso di Studio) evaluates the qualification and determines whether full or partial recognition can be granted.

If partial recognition is granted, the applicant may enroll in the corresponding degree program and complete the missing examinations.

If full recognition is granted, an additional administrative fee (€450) is required for issuing the official equivalence certificate (certificato di equipollenza).
